[Democracy Today in the USA]

Democracy Today in the USA

Nexus Instituut Symposium

Saturday, May 21, 2016
DeLaMar Theater, Amsterdam
2:00 pm

This event occurred on:

"Never before has there been here in the United States such a great void in the heart; the true faith seems gone, "wrote Walt Whitman delivered in 1871. He referred to the American ideals of democracy, the democracy of Jefferson, Lincoln and Tocqueville and to the Enlightenment ideal that is slowly extinguished. But Whitman had hope: writers and intellectuals could learn restore true democratic thought in honor of the country. What has become of the vista? The primaries for the US presidency nearing conclusion. The once progressive "Grand Old Party" Abraham Lincoln shudders at the success of Trump, while the Democrats the established order the calls seem to win. The outcome will determine the world, but Americans call their political system bankrupt. Who rightly discontent and where they come from? What role do the media, big money, racial issues and populism? What is the current status of democracy in the US?
