Hannah Arendt and Environmental Activism
09-03-2015Recently, Ryan Butler, one of our followers on Twitter, sent us this image of his personal Arendt library:
Here's what Ryan had to say about the image he sent us:
"My name is Ryan Butler, and I am currently writing an M.A. thesis at the University of Victoria on environmental activism. Specifically, I am doing a critical discourse analysis of media coverage concerning the Burnaby Mountain protest against Kinder Morgan's proposed Tran-Mountain oil pipeline expansion. While my graduate committee has strongly encouraged me to situate my research within the critical realist tradition, I have found several avenues for integrating Arendt's insights into my project. Philip Walsh's ontological reading of "vita activa" in his latest book, Arendt Contra Sociology (as pictured), has been a fantastic resource for this integration. In reading Arendt, I have acquired a perspective that simply cannot be set aside. Whatever theorist I read, I am always evaluating their conception of freedom against Arendt's understanding of action."
