The goal of “Humanities for the People: a Writing Retreat to Advance the Relevance and Reach of Social and Cultural Study," is to provide time and space for a group of writers to engage in focused and sustained writing on topics that are relevant to humans beyond those currently interested in the humanities. Writers should, therefore, be working on topics of universal relevance.

About the Program

The writing retreat is envisioned as a first step in the constitution of a group of scholars whose research and publication practice will prioritize the people: people as they actually are—decent, reality-based, practical, humanitarian individuals as opposed to niche academics. The hosts of the retreat hope that the group will develop projects to establish and extend its influence in and beyond the humanities within the framework of the Hannah Arendt Humanities Network and OSUN.

As a result of the program, a new publishing platform for public humanities was created - also titled Humanities for the People. A monthly Medium feature promoting social and cultural scholarship for a broader audience, this platform provides a valuable outlet for scholars to share their work, fostering greater public understanding and appreciation of the humanities. Edited by Lobo, the platform has already featured essays by writing retreat participants on the topics of thinking beyond the binary, reflections on the relationship between China and Taiwan, and Ideology and Settler Colonialism.

Humanities for the People is a project organized by OSUN’s Hannah Arendt Humanities Network (HAHN), in partnership with Universidad de los Andes, and currently directed by Gregory J Lobo. The Humanities for the People project is open to contributions. Submit pieces of around 1500 words to [email protected].
